Quartz & Natural Stone Countertop Care
Proper care starts with knowing your countertop material. Engineered quartz, granite, marble, and quartzite have different cleaning and maintenance needs. Use this guide for everyday care, and follow the instructions for your specific slab, finish, manufacturer, and any applied sealer.
Everyday Cleaning & Protection
Wipe surfaces with a soft cloth, warm water, and a cleaner approved for your countertop material. Rinse away cleaning residue and dry with a soft cloth. Blot spills promptly, use cutting boards, and protect the surface with coasters and suitable trivets. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals.
Engineered Quartz Countertop Care
Engineered quartz generally does not require sealing. For routine cleaning, use a soft cloth with warm water and mild soap if permitted by the manufacturer. Avoid abrasive scrubbers and unapproved cleaners or surface treatments. Use a suitable trivet beneath hot cookware and heat-producing appliances; quartz is not heat-proof. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions for stubborn residue and specialty finishes.
Granite Countertop Care
Clean granite with a pH-neutral stone cleaner or mild dish soap and warm water, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Blot oil, wine, coffee, and other spills promptly. Avoid acidic cleaners and abrasive powders, and use cutting boards and trivets to protect the surface. Sealing needs vary by slab and finish; follow your stone supplier’s recommendations rather than a fixed annual schedule.
Marble Countertop Care
Clean marble with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for natural stone and a soft cloth. Blot spills promptly, especially lemon juice, vinegar, wine, and other acidic substances, which can leave dull marks called etching. Use coasters, cutting boards, and trivets. A suitable penetrating sealer can help reduce staining, but it does not prevent acid etching. Follow your supplier’s recommendations for your marble and finish.
Quartzite Countertop Care
Quartzite is a natural stone and requires different care from engineered quartz. Clean it with a pH-neutral cleaner approved for natural stone, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Blot spills promptly, avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners, and use cutting boards and trivets. Sealing needs vary by slab and any factory-applied treatments, so follow your stone supplier’s recommendations for the specific material and finish.
